After so long of waiting, what they had sought was finally in their reach. The biggest of the wolves, called Leader by his comrades, had many thoughts running through his head as he looked upon a very strange sight.
Aspen was skipping.
Well, as good as a horse can skip anyways; and humming too. A small smile was on her face as she crossed along the little flat area that led to the moors. A rather nasty place that brought back many memories, it had been her old home long ago when she had asked Rumbei for ownership of it. Why she had been so drawn to it, she would never quite understand. The place was dank and usually either in either extremity of temperature. It was also filled with deadly sinkholes, one of which that presumably claimed the mare Neomi's life. Trance's bastard son had also been his untimely end here when Aspen decided to kill him one fine day. The only ones who had ever truly lived here were Abyss and Aspen herself. The bad-mouthing Storm and that world-class pregnant dog Ayah had hung around enough, not to mention Hazard, the gayest stallion this side of the rainbow. But they were not Aspen's concern any longer, happily enough. She seemed to have the entire place to herself, to do with as she pleased.
Or so she thought.
Back in the trees, Leader gave the signal with a quick, urgent shuffle of paws, and the pack swept downhill from the forest. The unsuspecting mare had taken up another tune again, and was drifting idly towards a grove of young maples. She paused, lifting her grey muzzle and sniffing the wind. Something was up. She turned her head ever so slightly just in time to witness the group dashing out towards her, howling and yapping. Her ears pinned back in agitation, but she smiled weakly as the wolves, seven total, gathered around her in a semi-circle. Leader, bringing up the rear, pushed past two of the others to stand in front. He gave a low, throaty growl, keeping his golden-flecked eyes upon the little mare. She met his gaze fully with her own dim brown eyes, giving her head a shake. The wolves squirmed and whined with eagerness. Aspen looked at them carefully. They were thin, with their ribs showing in some places. They had dirty and matted coats, with the exception of a petite, pure white female standing near the edge of the group. They all wore the same hungry expression, same wild look in their eyes.
The mare smiled coolly, returning eye contact with Leader. He shivered. Something about her eyes bothered him a little, but he didn't quite know what. He kept his eyes locked on her, but sat back on his haunches. He opened his mouth, odd whining sounds escaping. The mare blinked in confusion, turning her ears toward him. Sorry? Didn't catch that. The wolf stopped the noise and just watched her. Finally, he gave a short bark that made the other canines tense up visibly. He gave a second bark and they began to scatter, making a great deal of noise as they did so. Aspen watched them with a frown. She faced Leader, who wore a sly smile. Beside him sat a pretty tan-colored female with pale eyes. The palomino mare started, not having noticed that wolf before. Swishing her tail, the female took a step forward and bowed her head. We are glad you have finally arrived. She lifted up her head with a grin. She looked around briefly as Aspen stared at her, speechless. You have not brought a Lord? She looked amused by this, for some reason. Aspen snorted loudly, lifting a hoof. Who do you think I am? I've only just arrived, haven't I? The two wolves exchanged uneasy glances. Looking back at Aspen, the female whined, Yes of course, I meant no offense. She bowed twice while the horse looked on in disbelief.
Presently the male wolf cleared his throat and looked at his comrade in a perplexed fashion, giving a few yips. The female nodded. Would you be so kind as to follow, M'lady? Aspen blinked and stood still for a moment. The wolves sat up, waiting patiently. All right.. Aspen said timidly, not quite sure what she was getting into.
