Altair plodded wearily into Astarte and whinnied for the others. While she waited she searched the hardened land for any trace of green. Finding a small plant she tore at it. She looked around for Flyte. The bay mare would probably turn up soon, as well as Sept and Vivian le Mar. It suprised her that they weren't ahead of her, as she had merely walked when they had galloped ahead. They couldn't have gotten lost, she expected Sept knew the way to Astarte well enough. Thirsty, she walked over to a pool and struck the icy surface with a sharp hoof. It cracked and Altair drank. The water was fresh, clear, sweet as usual, but it was frigid and cleared Altair's mind. She scanned the horizon in search for the others.

The cougar moved silently through the bushes, its amber eyes following the movement of a beautiful bay mare. To it, this was dinner. Hidden in the darkness of the foliage, the mare would never see the cougar coming. It crouched low to the ground, shoulders hunched, ears laid back against its head. Its leg muscles tensed and it rocked back slightly on its haunches, ready to leap... Sept had seen the attack from behind, ready to prevent the cougar from hurting Altair. At the same moment, both equine and feline pounced. The cougar was nearly flattened by Sept, who was snorting and stamping at the predator. Sept had it pinned down, but the cougar raked him with his claws, leaving him momentarily surprised. It got to its feet, hissing and snarling then ran off in surrender. Sept tossed his head, grunting in pain. Warm crimson blood dripped down into his mouth from his nose, where the cougar had scratched him. He also felt the pain in his lower leg. Sept turned, shaking his head and looking at Altair. You could have been dead. He murmured, sadness in his voice. He knew she felt jealous of Vivian, she probably felt that mare was better than her. What could be better than Altair though? Sept also knew that he loved her, afraid to admit it. They were one of the perfect couples, so much in common, so much like each other. He had never blamed her for Book's disappearence. That had been Book's own fault. But guilt had built a barrier between them. Sept wanted to break it. He pursed his lips pensively, wincing in pain at the throbbing gash on his nose and his leg. Altair.. He murmured, wishing he knew what to say next. I love you. He felt himself blurting out. He knew what it meant, those three words..

Altair heard a movement from behind and jerked her head, wheeling about. She saw Sept walking towards her, crimson staining his white coat. Sept! What...? Then she saw the dying cougar underfoot. Sept had protected her, but had injured himself in doing so. In the circumstances her mind raced on what to do. Then it occured to her. She reared up and struck the ice once more, making a large hole. Altair remembered what her dam had always told her, when she was hurt always soak the wound in cold water to prevent swelling. Astarte was full of it. She heard the truth in his words: 'I love you'. She felt something warm stir within her, the feelings that had been bottled up for some time finally bubbled out. She shook her head. Now was not the time. Soak your leg in that water. It will stop the swelling. She said, indicating the frozen pool she had just drank from. She walked over to him, and brushed against him offering her warmth. What next? A crazy idea had begun to form in Altair's mind... but it was risky. Sept had taken a risk for her, perhaps she could take one for him... For know she stayed near Sept and watched for more predators. She would need Flyte or Vivian le Mar to look after him while she was gone... She gave a desperate, loud whinny for one of them, both would be better. She felt so helpless, having to depend on Sept to defend her. But that was partly what she had joined this herd for... If she hadn't she would be dead. For now the best she could to is to slow the swelling and keep him warm.

vivian stopped at the 3 words that sept had spoken, those words were always spoken to another mare never her...her heart was shattered to peices, there was no chance for her here, she had loved sept from the moment he had set eyes on her, but she felt he didn't care one bit about her, only altair....twinkling diamonds streaming down her delicate facade, she whirled and without a word, galloped away...faster than she had ever galloped before...She thought sept had loved her, but she was wrong......

Sept groaned, looked at his blood-stained leg. The cut was long and wide, the crimson still dripping from it. He followed Altair obediently, sticking his leg into the frozen water carefully, sighing in relief. He stuck his nose in for a split-second, then looked up at Altair. He smiled. Thank you. He shifted around, making himself more comfortable while having his leg partly in the water. What's wrong? He asked after she had whinnied, ears pressed back against his head in pain. His nose throbbed, blood still dripping slightly. Sept looked around, alert for more cougars and wolves. It was a bad part of the winter.

{acts like wolf}
a large gray timber wolf stalked the shadows, lifting his nose he caught the scent of fresh blood and torn flesh, licking his chops..remembering how hungry he was...he snuck along the borker of the forest until he spotted a small river and a stallion, with his hoof partly submerged under water....he was down wind so the stallion could not scent him, with a mighty leap he went for the stallions hind legs, so he could hobble him.....

[great. ><]
Sept's ears shot up in alert and he dragged the hurt leg out from the icy water. It felt numb, perhaps that was what the water did. He snorted and whinnied, turning around with his back to the waterfall. Then he saw it all too quickly. A wolf jumping and trying to attack. Despite how he was injured, Sept would fight him off. He would try. He reared, flailing his good leg to try and ward off the predator. He hoped for contact with the matted grey fur, knock it away and keep it from coming. He couldn't survive on his own.

vivian struggled with her frozen hooves, every step sent agonizing pain through her body and she almost fell every time...she spotted sept she had forgiven him but had he her?? suddenly she saw his injured foot and a gaigantic gray wolf attempting to hobble her beloved stallion...she may not be his favorite mare of love of his life, but no wolf was about to kill her leige, especially when wounded.. she broke into a frozen legged gallop limping on all her pistons. As she edged nearer every step she looked like she would give out , but she wasn't that weak!! she suddenly realized she could kill the wolf with a swipe of her hoof, for they were frozen solid...as silent as she possibly could be , she reared...but she didn't make it she fell head first into the snow...she couldn't protect him as she had wanted....she had failed him and now she was going to die because of her foolishness. she lie there breathing heavily....she couldn't get up, and it was her own fault.....her breathing slowing she awaited the death strike.....

the mare felt no death strike, upon her silken hide...she felt herself showered with a spray of water...she was deathly numb and ill, she wished she could tell sept how sorry she was, but her vocals felt frozen, she lifted her head slightly and winced in pain...."Sept......" is all she could say, she tried to arise but only fell again, this time she heard the crack of bone and a horrid pain shot through the hide....suddenly as if by magic a small fire started, happening to be right next to her right flank, she squeled as it burned through to the skin and scarred.....she almost forced herself up in fright, she looked down...nothing there, yet she felt a searing coolness on her flank she looked....nothing. Her head went down almost instantly...she had used up far to much strength and knew she was slowly dying...but she didn't want to die, she tried to cry out to her beloved leige but nothing came...she tried and tried but nothing sounded forth...she felt like giving up but knew she couldn't she lied there seeping all the strength she had left to keep herself alive....she hoped that someone or something would help her.....hoped....oped....ped....everything went black again....

ooc: Whitey, you can say that a wolf has arrived, but you may not rp its actions from its point of veiw. You can say something like 'she saw the grey wolf launch itself at her stallion, attracted by the smell of fresh blood'... or similar to that, but please don't rp the actual wolf.
Gaia arrived in a gust of amazingly warm air. The wolf whipped around at the strange feeling of such a temperate gust. Begone, friend wolf, the goddess commanded in a voice that resonated through the air. You need not take down this stallion. The lupine yelped and took off, frightened by the sight of the unearthly being.
Gaia looked at the two equines. They were indeed ailing. The mare was stretched out in the snow, weak and sickly. The stallion stood in the frigid stream, a ribbon of red blood flowing ceaselessly from his leg. Ah now, my poor dears, we must get you warmed up. Come along, fine leader. I do believe that you have washed the gash well enough. The snow surrounding the mare began to melt, giving way to soft, moist earth. Succulent sprouts of grass poked through the surface, growing rapidly until they were nearly six inches tall. All of this required much of the spirit's concentration. It was difficult to maintain a warm environment when all else was meant to be wintry.
Gaia esablished her small area of sweet paradise and went over to the mare, nudging her neck and head. You need not rise yet, but it would best that you had something to fill your stomach. She turned her attention back to the stallion. All that the mare needed was time to warm up. The stallion needed immediate attention to his wounds.

Altair had lagged behind the goddess as she was very weary, but with a last burst of speed and endurance Altair rushed forward. She watched in awe as Gaia sent the wolf away, the temperature warmed, and grass started to grow. She collapsed wearily after a long run. Sept and Vivian had almost gotten killed. If she had stayed the wolf would not have gotten close to them, but they would die of injury and cold. But now Gaia was here to help, and everything would be okay... except Altair would have to pay a debt that she did not know yet. She took one last look at Sept and Vivian before feeling sleep close in on her and everything faded into dreams.

the red mare could smell grass, wafting through her nostrils. but it was winter, then breathlessly she looked at the black mare which had arrived.. she naturall began nibbling at the grass even though she was lying down she took a few bites and could find not the strength to do more, she knew she was being weak but she had tried her best to help herself only weakening her own spirit and seeping away all the strength she had. the few mouthfulls she had allowed her self to digest, the strength it gave her was disinigrated in a matter of seconds, gone to help her heart, she had a very bad case of frost bite even with the sudden change of tempratures...the frost bite and ice which covered her taloons would not permit her to take the leave of standing...every breathe she took was taking energy and every breath she took...she was 1 step closer to death....

Sept stumbled as he watched the earth goddess twist the forms of nature. He grunted, shifting his weight, watching still as she banished the predator away. Warm, tropical air spread around Astarte, the waterfall began to rumble, and grass was starting to grow around Gaia's hooves. Sept smiled at her plainly. Thank you for coming and helping us, Gaia. He limped over, tenderly placing his hurt leg on the ground with each step. His nose gash had scabbed over, blood no longer flowing freely. He looked at Altair, beaming. He knew why he loved that mare so much. She had helped him, he had helped her. She deserved to be a lead. Sept clenched his teeth, breathing in shallowly. He brought his head down, biting at the grass and chewing it slowly. He felt starved. After swallowing that bit, he looked up at Gaia. What needs to be done? He asked quietly, holding out his wounded leg, balancing himself on his other three. He looked over to see Altair sleeping, dreaming peacefully. Sweet dreams. He murmured, closing his eyes and thinking of happiness.
